American bakeries range from wholesale operations that supply restaurants to neighborhood shops that sell bread, pastries, cookies and cakes over the counter, and many of them also pour coffee. Bagel shops boil and bake on site and sell out of favorite flavors by late morning; donut shops open before dawn and are often family-run; patisseries and cake studios take custom orders for weddings and birthdays and usually need one to two weeks' notice. Ice cream parlors, gelato shops and frozen yogurt bars are seasonal in the northern states and year-round in the South and on the West Coast. Prices are posted per item, by the dozen or by the pound, and most shops now take cards and mobile payment.

Everything is so thoughtfully made, tastes incredible, and somehow looks just as good as it tastes. You can really tell how much care and creativity goes into every detail. Venla’s has completely spoiled me for other cakes — I genuinely can’t imagine ordering from anywhere else. Highly, highly recommend!

I wanted to love this bakery. The reviews and photos looked great. The service was wonderful. However, the flavor of the cake I ordered was pretty lacking. I got the confetti/birthday cake flavor and it was on the dry side, didn't have much vanilla flavor, and was barely sweet at all. The buttercream, I'm sorry to say, tasted like straight up butter with food coloring. Also the ratio of buttercream to cake was off, it had way too much frosting compared to cake. The design was pretty and close to what I ordered, but for the price I expected a much higher quality of execution. For example, the piping was sloppy. Overall I think for the price I should have received a nicer cake. I am happy to pay the prices listed (which are higher than other bakeries in metro Detroit) but the quality should be there to justify the price. I think a few adjustments to piping technique and recipes would really improve things.

Hanna is an incredibly talented and kind-spirited soul who incorporates strategic spunk into her designs without compromising the delectability of her cakes. The piping on the outside is always a joy to discover upon pick up, as is perfection on the inside first cut. Her gluten free cake is absolutely amazing! It honestly brought on the water works from my GF friend who often misses out on cake festivities. Venla’s for the win! Note: I had no control over that candle placement in provided photos. Her pics online are a true depiction of what you’ll get :)

We have ordered two cakes from Venla’s & they taste as good as they look! The rhubarb jam was divine. All our guests raved about it. We love the creativity & service is always stellar. They have become a fixture of our celebrations!

We recently ordered a custom cake for our wedding and Hanna did an incredible job! She really drilled down to understand my vision, and the cake she created could not have been more perfect. Not to mention delicious as well! We had such a hard time deciding on flavors because all the ones we tried were delicious, but our favorite ended up being the lemon poppyseed - perfect balance of sweet and tart!
